PMBOK - guidelines for project management work

Tasks of the standard PMBOK

PMBOK is a well thought out methodology full of practical advice on how to run projects. It does not try to create a standard, but summarizes the best experience that the authors have with project management.

What PMBOK is about

PMBOK consists of detailed guidelines, that goes down to the level of workflows. Unlike standards such as ASPICE, it is so-called descriptive, i.e. it says specifically what you should do.

Unlike Prince2, PMBOK does not prescribe specific names for inputs and outputs. It is therefore easier to merge PMBOK with another project methodology and include its recommendations in the IQMS.

It is difficult to highlight a few main themes of the PMBOK because its recommendations go through the whole project path from preparation to management of each aspect and activity. Some of the non-obvious emphases of the PMBOK are the emphasis on company-wide responsibility and the need for project management to fit into the logic of operations. Typically, this just means incorporating project methodology as one part of the IQMS.

Responsibility for communication and cooperation

The relatively largest part of the PMBOK is concerned with managing the way negotiations, agreements and negotiated decisions are made. The standard addresses communication issues both from a technological point of view - specifying requirements for appropriate tools - and from a competence point of view - listing the skills and competences that are necessary for project management (e.g. negotiation).

PMBOK si uvědomuje, že projekty dosahují cílů nebo padají s lidmi. Pokud se lidé nedokážou dohodnout, projekt nemá šanci uspět. A je odpovědností vedoucího projektu, aby se lidé dohodnout dokázali.

The tools that the PMBOK assumes a project manager has

The PMBOK lists a number of technologies that a project manager should have at their use and knowledge of. Project management software, as assumed by the PMBOK, is certainly not just a "task book" or even MS Excel (although that is certainly useful in planning).

  • Tools for documented and managed communication
  • Tools for efficient information sharing
  • Configuration management tool
  • Task management system
  • Requirements analysis system supporting traceability
